A Weathered Vintage Side Table

Is it me or does Monday seem to come back around faster every year?
Well it came back fast this week & if that wasn't bad enough...
it brought backup with some unseasonably cold temperatures,
strong winds &......more snow!!! UGH!!
Welcome to the Midwest folks.

I did get to hang for a while with a great friend & do a little shopping and
I got to spend some time with a few cool teenagers
who made me laugh so hard I had tears rolling down my face.
These are the moments I just want to freeze.

Buuuut, here we are back at Monday & time to get cracking again.
I just finished up a pretty little side table so I thought I'd share with you.

This poor little thing was another roadside find.
I really wish I had snapped a picture of it as I found it, but I was in a rush...as usual.
It was in pretty rough shape & its poor leg was lying about 5 feet away.

poor broken leg
I repaired the broken leg, some other minor issues & used filler anywhere it needed it.
After repair work & filler
The I sanded it all down until it was nice & smooth.
Sanded smooth
I really didn't expect this one to have any bleed through issues,
but once I put the first coat of paint on....there it was.
I went back and added a coat of Zinser primer, gave it a light sanding,
then went back to painting.
I don't have a color for this one since I mixed 3 different whites.
I didn't have the shade I wanted so I mixed what I had.
Never be afraid of mixing paint!
You can come up with some really great colors
& I even keep track of the 'recipes' I love in a notebook for future use.

The table got 2 coats of my custom white.
I used grey to highlight the hand carving
& underside of the table top.
Trimming out the hand carving for some interest
I wanted this piece to look heavily weathered so
I hit it with several different grits of sandpaper all over.
The legs & edges getting it heavier.
I waxed the table with Cece Caldwells clear wax
& I just have to say....LOVE this stuff!!!!!
It almost smells like honey to me & it glides on so smooth.
After using this lately it may be very hard to use anything else!

I buffed it twice & the sheen on it is amazing.
One of these days it'll warm up some
& I can go back to taking pictures outside.

I love this little table; she makes me smile.
She's pretty short for a side table coming in at only 17 3/4" tall.
I still think she's adorable.

"Go ahead.....color outside the lines."

  2. WOW! I am amazed by this! You were the saving grace of this table. I am positive many would have given up on her since she was very damaged. This was a furniture resurrection.

    1. Awe Beja you are so very sweet to me. I think it's the truly beautiful, usually hand-built pieces that are the most damaged that draw me in & give me a stubborn streak to fix them. I can't help but think of the person who so carefully built it piece by piece & how they would feel if they saw it in that condition. Oh my gosh could I be any more of a cornball sap?!? Ok before I write a love song to go along with the table I will say have a wonderful day :)

  3. Beautiful! I love the grey accent color. I have a piece with similar detail, I think I'll give it a shot. Thank you for the inspiration.

    1. Thank you Sara & I could not agree more. It makes me so sad to see some of the beautiful treasures I've found in such horrible condition. I do love the opportunity to give them new life though :)

  7. You actually make it seem really easy with your presentation however I to find this
matter to be actually something that I think I would by
no means understand. It kind of feels too complex and extremely vast for
me. I'm having a look forward on your next post, I'll attempt
to get the hold of it!
